At GT, our windscreen repair resins have been independently tested by a leading UK university laboratory. A common question in the industry is whether windscreen repair resin contains acid?—a topic often surrounded by uncertainty.

To illustrate this, the image compares substances ranked by acidity. While water is neutral, milk and GT REPAIRX resin follow closely; though not technically neutral like water, they are among the least acidic substances shown. For context, these are followed by coffee, tomatoes, cola, vinegar, lemon, and finally, battery acid on the right of the picture.

This comparison does not mean caution is unnecessary. All brands of windscreen repair resin are industrial adhesives. A risk assessment should always be conducted, adopting a hierarchy of control measures to ensure working safely, so far as is reasonably practicable. Best Practice & Safety

Personal protective equipment (PPE) is just one part of working safely and sometimes thought as the only control measure.

Best practice includes:

Using resin in well-ventilated areas, commonly outdoors by default.
Wearing nitrile gloves and safety glasses.
Storing bottles in supplied sealed zip-lock bags.
Washing skin immediately with soap and water upon contact.
Other PPE determined by RA.

It is a misconception that a lack of smell equals safety. In fact, odourless vapours could be more hazardous because they offer no warning of exposure—similar to carbon monoxide. An adhesives chemical vapour still exists even if there is no smell.

People can react differently to every day items and foods and no one person will be the same. It could be like a nut, milk or egg allergy or even a hair dye reaction, which is why hairdressers carry out skin patch tests days before colouring someone's hair.

Plastic Syringe Dispensing in the 1990's

Using a plastic syringe in the 1990's was common practice. However in 2023 it is still evident. Single use syringes which are either amber or clear are not UV resistant when put to test on a June sunny day. These methods make the equipment and a technician none compliant to BS AU 242b:2022 and also make them work in a none sustainable way, Incidentally, the GT resin in the black bottles is all you need to dispense into a GT system, which not only makes you compliant to British Standards but makes you more sustainable and efficient too. GT uses half the amount of resin to do a repair that a syringe would use.

GT 0.1ml not 0.3ml in a syringe if you count the resin wasted and left in the needle, which is more often than not just flushed on the floor!

Poor Previous Repair Attempt

Why would this of happened?

This is not a GT Repair just for the record!

This repair should have been an easy repair if done correctly. Here we look at many reasons why it could have happened.

To a new repair technician this may look like a repairable damage as did the customer on this occasion. One of the hardest tasks as a trainer is training new techs how to recognise old damage. To be honest its something you learn with experience. Repairing this damage in the way described for fresh damage would result in zero improvement. Whilst it is obvious to us we will try to explain to help you when starting out.

How can we tell?

The centre impact is filled with pit fill.

It looks fairly smooth on the impact (centre) although it could have been crusty if it was an older repair.

If you drilled this impact it would powder up differently (cured resin) than if you was drilling glass without resin in it.

It would drill quite easily compared to glass.

You can not drill through the resin to reopen the damage

The clear ring in the middle is where resin did get in .

The outer ring with black in it is where the resin did not get in and remains as unrepaired damage.

Why would this happen?

A DIY repair kit used.

Untrained technician-no accreditation to BS AU 242:b:2022

Substandard windscreen repair resin-not BS AU 242b:2022

Resin used could have been too thick and not of good quality

Poor quality equipment-Not BS AU 242b:2022

Old resin used and use by date surpassed. 2 years is the optimum peak performance date.

Heat was used in an attempt to make the resin thinner ( Naked flame is very common).

Some uncontrolled heat sources (Naked flame) closes the damage up to stop the resin flowing.

No UV shield used if it was done outside. Its started to cure and thus thicken the resin so that the resin stops flowing.

A none UV resistant syringe and needle used outside which has compromised the resin during the dispensing.

Air has not been removed before resin injected to create a void. Air out resin is known as VP-vacuum and pressure

Some systems try to squeeze resin into the void where air still exists. Resin in before air out known as displacement/direct pressure

Dirt and water present in the damage and adhesion has been compromised with contamination.

The water could have hydrophobic contamination (Rain X) within it which could have repelled the resin within the damage.

The points above are some of the factors which could have contributed to such a poor outcome. These types of repairs a

within most technicians capability if they comply with the 4M principal of BS AU 242b:2022 which has addressed some common bad practice.

An experienced technician may drill a fresh impact into the outer black ring and attempt some degree of improvement;

Sustainable Windscreen Repair

Bs au 242:2022-Reduced use of single use plastics

Commonly used resin dispensing syringes and needles are manufactured from 5 parts of plastic when you include the original plastic packaging.This would mean that for every 100 windscreen repairs carried out using a single use syringe you would use 500+ parts of plastic from needles and syringes alone.

The GT way would be to dispense direct from a single 3 part, 15ml UV resistant bottle and disposed of in an environmentally safe way. Eliminating plastic use is near on impossible but at GT we have cut its use by 98% whilst improving resin efficiency by 50%

A GT 15ml bottles using 6 drops of resin without a syringe will do 100 repairs when using the GT Super Vac System

A syringe will use when including the resin in the needle shaft about 12 drops per repair

497 less parts of plastic used the GT way for every 100 repairs carried out.

Having gone through a thorough approvals process of working towards BS AU 242b:2022 both Ian and Tom have both been accredited as the first UK candidates of the 4M Windscreen Repair Compliance course run by GT.

Both Ian and Tom passed with distinction having sat a technical exam and a practical assessed outcome. Both Ian and Tom can now promote any repair activities they undertake as BS AU242b:2022 compliant. GT can formally assess candidates through the same assessment course that Ian and Tom have done

Tom said" its great to get some recognition for the 20 years I have worked as a windscreen repair technician. Tom commented that "other than this 4M Certificate, the only other thing I had passed in my life was my driving test". Tom added "I have always enjoyed working in the industry but never had any formal recognition to demonstrate how professional I try to be at all times". Its a great feeling to have some third party accreditation proving it.

Although Tom had worked as a repair technician for 20 years he was not formally considered competent . Now with his new status he is considered c urrently competent. Ian with more than 30 years experience and a 10 year old NVQ was considered competent, but not currently competent. Now with his new status, Ian is also considered formally as currently competent for a period of five years.

1.Windscreen technician issued a none accredited certificate of attendance by a training provider 5 years ago- Not Competent to British Standards

2. Windscreen technician working for 20 years without any accreditation -Not competent to British Standards

4. A windscreen repair technician with an NVQ older than 5 years- Competent, but not to currently competent to British Standards

5. A windscreen repair technician or trainer who has passed the GT 4M Course- Currently Competent (Tom and Ian)

In the UK there are a number of windscreen repair trainers with over 30 years of individual experience. This experience is gained from being time served working as a technician in the field, where you learn the most as a trainer. At GT we only have trainers who have 20 to 30 years training experience (Combined 50 years).

Are you good enough to be a British Standard compliant windscreen repairer?

You may be surprised to learn that we can carry out windscreen repair assessments on any equipment you may have. You do not have to buy new or use GT. It could be a mix and match repair kit with components from a variety of repair kits made into one functional kit.

The components need to be compliant in their own way. For example your UV light must be fit for purpose and cure the resin using the recommended UV curing wavelength. Your equipment will need to be capable for you to undertake an assessed outcome. You will be asked to repair a typical windscreen repair such as a 20mm star break with multiple legs following new BSI guidelines.

We can take you through the whole process from start to finish on our 4M compliance course so long as you are a competent windscreen repair technician. On completion you will receive accreditation as a compliant windscreen repair technician working to BS AU 242b:2022.

The difference between assessment and training explained

Training and assessment explained:

What ever your equipment we can assess you to BS AU 242b:2022.

It does not need to be GT!

GT provides free training for anyone who purchases repair equipment at a date and time to suit you. You name the date and we will try to accommodate you in a very small time frame. Training will take around 3 hours and you will leave with your equipment on the day. Training is exactly what you would expect it to be. Hands on with a time served industry expert ranging between 15 or 30 years showing you all you need to know about windscreen repair and how to use your equipment. You will be trained "towards" the new British Standard BS AU 242b:2022. You will be capable of undertaking a windscreen repair when you leave the course.However you will not be considered industry competent to be assessed and accredited on your training day as a BS AU 242b:2022 repair technician as you will not be competent.

Assessment centre coming very soon!

To be assessed as competent you must be a competent windscreen repair technician who is already working in the field. It may be that you are a smart repair technician with windscreen repair as part of your services, a glass polisher or a stand alone windscreen repair technician. Having completed your training above and been working in the industry for a minimum of 3 to 6 months we would consider you as competent enough to come and be assessed.

What do we mean by assessed?

Certification and claims of working to old bsi 1998 standards have gone unchecked and without formal third party accreditation for many years. Claiming to work to the new British Standard BS AU 242b:2022 can only be advertised or promoted if you have had an assessed outcome at an accreted assessment centre. Formally accredited with a 5 year certificate compliant to BS AU 242b:2022 will make you stand out amongst the rest.

You do not have to be assessed to carry out windscreen repairs as it is entirely voluntary. However from the 31st March 2023 you must remove any claims of conformity to British Standards if you are not accredited with an assessed outcome (5 year certificate). We purchased an alternataive suppliers new UV syringes and put them to the test

Having for many years supplied unprotected UV syringes the move towards BSI compliance has had suppliers testing and launching new UV resistant consumables. However whilst the UV capabilities have been tested what has been missed is that one drop of resin or contamination from your glove strips the black ink measuring gauge from the barrel instantly.

Not being able to measure the resin accurately is a none compliance unless you buy more plastic syringes for "single use" so that the gauge does not get stripped.

BS AU 242b:2022 specifically states the following

Super hot days forecast ahead so here are some windscreen repair kit reminder tips for the ultimate bsi compliant windscreen professional.

1.Work indoors wherever possible. 2. If you can not work in doors move the vehicle into the shade of a building out of direct sunlight-You will still need your UV shield. 3. Do not even attempt starting a repair if you do not have clean UV resistant syringes. 4. Keep your repair kit in your van to work out of and close your windscreen repair kit case immediately. 5. Turn the vehicle around so its not facing the sun-You will still need your UV shield. 5. Cool the glass down by positioning the vehicle as mentioned in point (2 & 5). 6. Use a thermal shield prior to starting to cool the glass down. 7. Dispense resin in a 100% UV resistant way. 8. Decontaminate your equipment with acetone after every use. 9. Do not use a UV dome as they have 25% of the side missing and UV will still cure the resin prematurely. (Its like trying to fill a bucket full of water with a big hole in it). 10. Position GT 100% UV weather Shield (Clear) or UV shield (Blue) over your bridge BEFORE you dispense. 11. Do not dispense resin and then put the UV shield in place as the resin will be compromised in seconds! 12.If you have a UV shield which you have to remove mid repair to observe the repair you will compromise the resin. 13.We would recommend you do not even start a repair if you are not following these simple steps or simil ar.

When you make your enquiries about windscreen repair training you should simply ask how long your trainer has been repairing windscreens? There are quite a few trainers out there from companies like GT where the trainers have been in the industry for nearly 30 years actually doing the job in the field and then passing that knowledge on in their training session. What you should be aware of is that some company brands will talk about being 40 years old yet the trainer has only been in the business for a year or two. Having never worked in the field these new to the industry trainers have replaced the older time served trainers who have moved on or retired. Ask the questions. How long have you personally been repairing windscreens? Its a good starting point!

Aware of the nature reserve at North Somercoates where seals pup every November/December we took a day off windscreens out of interest to see what plastic was actually on that coastline near the nature reserve. We collected 2 big black bin liners of plastic waste having to leave some larger parts behind as we were unable to carry them. It was quite a shock in what we found in 6 hours walking a narrow trail. Repairing long cracks is achievable but not something we will train you to do. The structural integrity of the vehicle is centred around the strength offered by the glass remaining in situ during a collision. Training room techniques for crack repair on fresh damage can create some impressive results. However in reality we know that in the real world with the introduction of moisture and dirt the integrity of a crack repair is questionable.

Repairing long cracks of 7 inches as an example will not be recommended as future standards change. So if you are looking for training to repair long cracks we do not do that as the practice is now questionable with structural and windscreen mounted technologies needing to be factored in. A training provider who does repair long cracks will not be recognised by an awarding body.

Our insurers would not cover our liability for crack repair training and neither would our awarding body.

If you do have a trainer who still trains you to do crack repair we would recommend that you speak to your insurer about your liability when not working to an approved standard.

Our crack resin is just for star breaks and will in time be changed to avoid any confusion. Our approach is do not repair all, work to the standards and where the standards allow you to repair proceed with the skill your trainer has imparted on you. Ignoring the standards could be at your peril.

Windscreen repairs in the perfect storm!

From experience we always examine how things actually work for real and not in the perfect world. Not all windscreen repairs are in the middle of a windscreen which allows for a dome to fit securely to the glass.

What happens if the repair is near the corner or not too far away from the edge?

1.With all the gaps from the access point and from the edge how UV resistant can it be, 100% or 75%?

2. How windproof would it be in high winds? Surely it could take off if all the suction cups are not secure?

3. How rain proof would it be if you was caught in a shower mid repair?

4 How would you attach it to a vertical windscreen and how would you be able to work with a dome in position?

These questions come from our experience from using domes. In the perfect world they work in principle but in reality 50% of the time they are not usable.

They cost the best part of £100 and are only usable 50% of the time and ignore the fact that they are not 100% UV resistant.

If ever you see a picture of a dome in use its only ever in position in the middle of a windscreen, never hanging over the edge of a car!

It is a 10 out of 10 for effort and 10 out of 10 in appearance. However its 2 out of 10 for UV resistance, 2 out of 10 for being windproof and 2 out of 10 for protecting from a rain shower!

They are not likely to be BSI compliant in 2021 unless they are redesigned so what is their purpose?

With GT we only use 100% UV resistant shields which may not be as pretty as a dome but 100% effective. (Like its says on the tin!)

Windscreen Repair kit Injector Cleaning Time.

As with all tools there comes a time to be cleaned from contaminated grease, dirt, oil and in this case windscreen repair resin. If you are familiar with using plastic tools you will be more likely to throw your plastic injector away and start again. As you can see in the picture there is a build up of cured resin which can be cleaned off with isopropyl alcohol or acetone.

This injector pictured was working perfectly holding vacuum and pressure but needs to be stripped back every couple of weeks to carry out this 5 minute maintenance. Once cleaned it will really be like new again. The acetone in the picture (nail varnish remover) can be purchased in a small bottle like this from most chemists for around £3.00.

We do not supply bottles of flammables in our kits as there are restrictions on flammables being sent through the post and its safer for you to manage that risk yourself and know what fire risks you are dealing with.

Once you have cleaned the injector remove the seals and assess if they are loose and replace if necessary. When you replace the large inner black seal you must use a very thin coat of seal grease. Once the grease is applied you almost have to dry wipe it away as you only need a small amount.

For daily cleaning of residue we recommend small IPA wipes for keeping up with everyday residue removal.

The importance of 100% UV resistance during the windscreen repair process is something that an industry claiming to be professional has not ever taken seriously. A professional windscreen repair technician using an unprotected clear dispensing syringe is currently seen as being acceptable, exposing resin to ambient UV at the point of use.

Give the same technician an ice cream and they will probably protect their ice cream better than they would their windscreen repair resins. Here at GT it has to be 100% UV resistant factored into how our windscreen repair kits operate and how we would train you on our windscreen repair training course.

With the launch date of the new windscreen repair standard BS au 242:2021 expected in autumn 2021 GT now have fully airconditioned training facilities for our new to be launched certificated courses. Training and assessment will be carried out at our new training facility here in Lincoln accessible 10 miles away from the A1, 10 miles away from the East Coat mainline running from London to Scotland and a 5 minute walk from the nearest train station in Lincoln.

An IBIS hotel is 2 miles away from our Lincoln training location. Our sessions will involve prior learning of the new windscreen repair standard BS au 242:2021, multiple choice online examination under exam conditions and an actual windscreen repair practical assessment. On successfully completing your day you will be certificated and awarded your qualification which will remain current for 5 years.

Working to British Standards since 1998 has always been claimed by most windscreen technicians unchecked and unverified. From the launch of BS au 242b:2021 only technicians who have undertaken training and assessment will be able to work to British Standards.

Windscreen Repair UV shields in preparation for BS au 242b:2021

Compliance to windscreen repair standards means that the resin should be UV protected from the minute it leaves the bottle to the point of final cure. This means no clear unprotected syringes as a basic compliance.

Windscreen repair domes have 25% missing from their side as an access point making them not 100% UV resistant. Solid black UV shields designed to fit around an injector are commonly put in place after the resin has been dispensed (resin exposed during dispensing) and commonly removed mid repair so that damage can be viewed thus exposing the resin to UV at the point of inspection.

Here at GT we have as standard clear UV shields which allow you to dispense resin under the UV shield, work with your injector in a UV safe way under the shield observing without exposing to UV. In addition apply Pit Fill UV safely until you are happy with the outcome and acts as a great shower cover if it starts to rain mid repair.

Unless you are 100% UV resistant from start to finish of the windscreen repair process you need to look at your process and become 100% UV resistant.

Working to British Standards and claiming compliance has always gone unregulated and unchecked. From around autumn in 2021 the windscreen technicians will need to be assessed and demonstrate competence to be able to claim to be working to British Standards. Working to these new British Standards will mean that true windscreen professionals will attend to your vehicle taking into account the position of windscreen mounted technologies, ADAS and HUD exclusion zones.

Many other factors will need to be considered including 100% UV resistance during the repair process and consumables are quality assured. With the advancements of vehicle safety features full consideration needs to be given to when to repair, how to repair and where not to repair. Would you have a gas engineer work on your gas boiler who was not trained, assessed and certificated?

GT is currently working towards being able to provide full training assessment with our training centre opening soon where assessments can be carried out with multiple choice examinations leading to a five year certificate of bsi compliance.

After many years the new windscreen repair standard BS AU 242b:2021 is nearly ready for publication. At GT we have been anticipating this day for a long time as the old standards titles refer to 1994 and 1998. Having a 2021 dated standard will recognise new technologies and ensure that anyone who is carrying out repairs to BS AU 242b:2021 is competent having undergone training with an assessed outcome. GT will soon be in a position to offer these windscreen repair training courses in conjunction with GQA qualifications.

If you have happened to be sold recently a windscreen repair kit compliant to BS au 251:1998 in 2021 we recommend you speak to your supplier to receive free upgrade as the industry has known changes were imminent for 18 months and should have forewarned you at the time of purchase that BS AU 242b:2021 was coming in. Did they tell you?

BS au 251:1998 does have a run down period where companies may try and sell off old plastic parts, 12 volt parts and old UV tube lights but we would recommend that you buy only BS AU 242b:2021 compliant components. Plastic Seals and plastic waste components from windscreen repair

Not a million miles away from GT is a coast line awash with seals from Donna Nook to Norfolk. Two days ago Mrs Vicar was rescued with a plastic ring around her neck which is thought to have been there two and a half years.

GT has consistently on this blog and on industry committees tried to raise awareness about plastic waste in our industry and how plastic waste can easily be designed out of windscreen repair process. Whilst plastic elimination is unlikely we feel an 80% reduction (as an example) by using a 15ml bottle (3 parts plastic) instead of x3-5ml bottles (12 parts plastic) for the same amount of resin.

Syringe less windscreen repair, no retail blister packaging and no plastic injectors. There is no appetite for change as the inconvenience in the pursuit of profit and inconvenience takes favour over wildlife.

Whilst Mrs Vicars injuries are not caused by windscreen repair waste the impact on wildlife from small component windscreen repair waste is being ignored through lack of awareness. GT just tries to play our part and raise awareness of this hidden industry waste.

Mrs Vicar make her recovery

A seal that had a plastic ring stuck around its neck for two-and-half years has had it removed after being rescued from a Norfolk beach. The animal, named "Mrs Vicar", was captured on Horsey Beach, near Great Yarmouth, on Easter Sunday.

It is being cared for at the RSPCA's East Winch wildlife centre after having the ring taken off by vets. Alison Charles, manager at the centre, said the wound was "very sore, but we are hopeful she will recover".

The Orange Bat from WRD Glass Tools is another device for the removal of bonded windscreens and other vehicle glasses. The system uses a specially designed fibre cutting line. Together with the removal tool this method is not only gentle to the vehicle, but also fast. The high tensile strength cutting line reaches a similar performance as conventional metal cutting wires. But the line reaches a similar performance as conventional metal cutting wires. But at the same time it is so soft and flexible that damages to the vehicle‘s paint or sensitive surfaces of the interior can be excluded completely. Furthermore, the cutting line can be used several times; usually you will be able to cut out 4-5 windscreens with one piece of cutting line. Have you been trained wrong thinking the experts were training you right?

For over thirty years companies have trained in the process of repairing windscreens using the equipment supplied. What they have not been trained in is the importance of UV protection of the repair resin during the repair process. For many years so called experts have been training using a syringe which does not have UV protection.

Putting resin into a syringe without UV protection compromises the resin as soon as it goes into the syringe altering the resin viscosity during the repair process and ultimately compromising the outcome as it thickens during use.

Most time served technicians will tell you how the syringe blocks up as resin cures in the barrel whilst working out a process to unblock it, perhaps a paper clip!

Beware of flammables in atomizer bottles on the market!

The debate has always been how to clean your windscreen repair tools?

Glass Cleaner, methylated spirit, acetone or in some cases a dry clean with blue roll.

GT Smart has always advocated IPA Isopropyl Alcohol as the best method of cleaning your equipment and degreasing the surface you are going to adhere to.

Avoid ATOMIZER bottles which spray a fine mist as the vapour could drift onto hot parts ( exhaust manifolds), naked flames (some people still use a lighter) mobile phone use or inhalation by the user.

We are aware, although not recommended by GT that a lot of repair technicians "still" use a naked flame in and around the repair area even if a lighter was not supplied with their windscreen repair kit!

GT Smart has no desire to sell, handle or post this extremely flammable liquid out to you. Please mitigate the risks on handling and storage in and around any electrical components and batteries in your windscreen repair kit.

Simply put you can buy IPA Isopropyl alcohol off Amazon Prime, delivered safely and legally, avoiding Royal Mail restrictions for around £5 to £10 a litre.

If using this wet flammables method safely decant the IPA into a 5ml or 10ml dropper bottle to be used sparingly at the point of use to reduce the risk of serious injury,explosion or burns.

Single Use Plastic Waste in Windscreen Repair Kits

The claims of windscreen repair being an eco friendly service are correct in that glass being repaired is a great service to offer.

However if that process is carried out using needless single use plastic surely that benefit is counter productive.

Here at GT we concentrate on all aspects of our windscreen industry including the hidden bits others do not consider.

If you want 15ml of GT resin our most popular size (100 repairs) we supply it in one bottle.

We carried out an exercise and discovered that an industry refill pack with a 5ml bottle would have 13 parts of plastic derived from it. If you buy 3 bottles of 5ml in a refill pack that makes 39 parts of plastic using 60% more resin

The GT way is a 15ml bottle a lifetime tool and 3 parts of plastic and uses 60% less resin than a plastic syringe dispensing system.

Plastic Tools v Highly Engineered Tools

A world of safety systems and windscreen mounted technologies now dominate the windscreen industry. The best tools, the best calibration, the best windscreen adhesives and the best of British PLASTIC windscreen repair tools!

A £3.00 plastic windscreen repair injector as commonly found in a DIY windscreen repair kit costing £10 from a homeware store can also be found in some professional windscreen repair kits costing £600.

Wrapping a £3.00 plastic injector around a £600 case and contents is not the GT way.

At GT Smart we only have highly engineered tooling at a price which is not too far away from a plastic £600 equivalent.

Plastic injectors commonly use syringes which are not UV resistant and compromise the quality of the resin before you have even used it. GT Smart engineered injectors do not use syringes so the resin is not compromised by ambient UV before you start a repair.

Did you know that medical grade syringes are intended for single use medical use applications and not for dispensing UV unstable windscreen repair resin? Worse still the windscreen industry professionals then repeatedly use the same syringe (not fit for purpose) without cleaning so that pristine resin is mixed with residue from a previous repair from the day before.

The point of use where a syringe is no longer used is where the syringe loses its rubber plunger or where its cured and contaminated resin residue makes it inoperable.

GT highly engineered injectors use 66% less resin (4 drops) without a syringe as opposed to (12 drops) with a plastic injector and a syringe. If not properly disposed of needles and syringes can contaminate the environment as well as being an additional unnecessary consumable cost too.

A small investment saving on a plastic injector windscreen repair kit is soon lost when you factor in that you will be using 66% more resin at an inflated price.

Safety matters until it comes to windscreen repair where UV compromised resin is injected into a plastic injector using un stable UV dispensing techniques from the 1990's. This happens hundreds of times a day in the UK!

Professionals at work in an insurance and safety driven sector. Raising the bar is an unwelcome inconvenience but it does really matter.

Sustainable windscreen repair for 2020

The feature image shows the reliance on single use plastic used in every day windscreen repair. Plastic injectors, syringes plastic needles, plastic pots, plastic lids, retail blister packs, razor blade holders all of which can be designed out of the repair process.

Here at GT we do not use retail blister packs (as our products are not displayed on a shelf). We do not use plastic syringes as they are not UV resistant and can be detrimental to resin performance before use. We do not use plastic injectors because we only use properly engineered professional stainless steel VTP tooling.

A syringe is not just a single plastic item as it comes with a plunger, a needle, a needle sleeve and plastic blister package. GT has designed out the use of most single use plastics. Whilst it is difficult to eliminate plastic usage GT is proud that our process has designed out 70% of our plastic within the repair process.

GT stainless steel injectors do not need syringes as they take drops direct from the bottle using 66% less resin than a plastic injector which uses 12 drops per repair. We support BSI world standards day on the 14th October 2020 with its theme of "protecting the planet with standards"

Windscreen Repair Drilling.

Here at GT we always have an open mind about what may have been the way forward in the past but not necessarily suitable for the future in conjunction with new repair technologies. There is no doubt that drilling has its supporters from a historical stand point.

1990's plastic screw thread, windscreen repair injectors needed you to prepare to repair by drilling first to get near to the PVB interlayer. Drilling in this way would enable the windscreen repair resin to flow. There is no doubt though that without drilling the finish of a repair is more superior if the damage is probed and not drilled.

Similarly, todays 1990's designed plastic thread repair kits have always used unprotected UV medical grade syringes to dispense UV unstable windscreen repair resins. In hind sight, Its laughable that this is acceptable in todays ADAS safety focused world. GT Smart stopped using un protected UV syringes (less single use plastic benefits too) with our injectors last year when the penny dropped that actually it was bad practice...….but something we always did without thinking about it,

With the advance of vacuum then pressure repair systems (VTP) the only requirement may only be to use a probe and clear the debris rather than gauging it out with a drill. We know some repair technicians who "for years" have used GT repair injectors without drilling because of the superior finish to every repair they achieve.

After many years of knowing how some of our technicians operate without drilling is it time for all of us to open our minds and stop doing what we have always done and getting what we have always got? Does drilling cover up the inadequacies of a windscreen repair injector? VTP systems have the power to extract air and push resin in without the need to drill after all!

Has the penny dropped on drilling this year like un protected UV syringes did last year? Its got us thinking whilst we do some testing!

The very second windscreen repair resin has contact with natural UV it begins to thicken and change the viscosity of the resin prior to it even entering the damage. This would mean using a none UV resistant syringe as commonly used in the UK and European markets would expose the resin to natural UV.

The standard practice during the repair to prevent premature curing whilst the windscreen repair resin is running through the damage is a cloth or rag. Does a cloth stop natural UV 100% ? Some windscreen repair kits use a UV shroud.

Some windscreen repair kit manufacturers have come up with a solution. They have introduced an injector head UV cover. However the cover being black and not transparent means you have to remove the UV cover (exposing the resin to natural UV) to see how the repair is progressing and to enable injector adjustments.

Working at height when carrying out a windscreen repair on a commercial vehicle or bus is not usually a consideration or topic of discussion. Whilst Staging with trap doors are commonly used for windscreen replacements the "go to" piece of equipment for a windscreen repair on a commercial vehicle will generally be a step ladder.

Height can be significant like we established on this Scania windscreen at a head height of 15 feet and a significant height for a head injury on a concrete floor. Trailing cables in the working area are another safety issue in the workplace

Time on a step ladder can be reduced by quicker repair times and fewer movements on the step ladders. Fewer movements can be reduced by not having to go up and down the step ladders connecting 12 V cables for LED UV Curing or drills to power packs.

With GT Smart we only use windscreen repair injectors which can reduce the height exposure and windscreen repair time in half. Eventually residue from all the previous applications blocks the chamber from repeated natural UV exposure or the rubber piston seal within the chamber becomes perished or unattached. 2020 Technology windscreen repair tools use windscreen repair resin application which does not expose windscreen resins to natural UV as part of the repair process.

Between applications the single use syringe and needle are not IPA cleaned as would be recommended meaning that each application of fresh and pristine resin mixes repeatedly with residue from previous resin doses which have been left in the chamber exposed to air and UV from previous dosing applications. Contamination of old windscreen repair resin in the chamber with new windscreen repair resin is not a good starting point for any windscreen repair system.

If you use a windscreen repair kit which uses plastic needles and syringes the instructions in the windshield repair kit tell you to use 0.2ml of resin for each windscreen repair.

What is not factored in is that the needle holds 0.1ml of windscreen repair resin in addition to the 0.2ml of windshield repair resin in the syringe. 0.3ml of repair resin is drawn from your windscreen repair resin bottle.

As an Example

This means when you buy a 5ml bottle of windscreen repair resin for 25 windscreen repairs you will actually get 17 repairs and not 25 repairs as advertised.l

Or simply put...

Syringes rarely offer UV protection resulting in blocked with cured resin within the chamber and needle. Whilst we accept that syringes are still needed by some of our resin customers using other types of windscreen repair kits, switching to life time metal syringes reduces plastic, makes cured resin blockage in the metal needle less likely and saves you on a consumable cost.
